Farmer Spotlight: Emily Lamb

Canis Environmental

Emily Lamb grew up as a feral farm child in the Fallen Timber and Sundre areas before moving away to discover “bigger and better” things. Little did she know, those things would lead her to Water Valley, about 20kms from her original stomping grounds.

After a few years of soul searching and working in the outdoor industry throughout Canada and the US, Emily eventually settled on a small piece of land west of Winchell Lake. As her outdoor and environmental work evolved into a career as a Wildlife Professional, and rural living furthered her passion for living close to the land, Emily found the company of a well trained dog not only beneficial in these endeavours, but necessary.

She began to realize the potential of professional canines in the environmental industry, which eventually led to the formation of “Canis Environmental” where she combines her wildlife consulting and field skills with the natural ability and instinct of her Wildlife Service dogs. Canis Environmental works all over western Canada; from helping local farmers resolve predation issues, to nest/bird aversion on pipelines, to hazing bears off remote industrial sites.

After over 15 years in the outdoor and environmental industries Emily began to realize the value of local, ethical food acquisition and wanted to work toward making healthier, more responsible choices.

This has culminated on her farm “Little Bird Landing” where, along with her dad and other family, she raises and sells small batches of sustainable, grass fed beef. Emily’s passion for local food and the outdoors doesn’t stop there, and over the years she’s spent much of her free time hunting, fishing, trapping and foraging.

This has resulted in her outdoor education  company “Canis Outdoors”, where she provides classes and workshops on Wild Edibles, Wildlife Awareness, Wild Game Processing/Cooking and more, as well as outdoor articles for publications across North America.
